Open source

LM Mini is open core.

The free app is MIT-licensed on GitHub: chat, on-device models, LM Studio and Ollama on your Wi‑Fi, personas and voice. Pro features ship only in the official App Store, Google Play and Mac builds. Your subscription pays for the work.

MIT License · Flutter / Dart · iOS · Android · macOS

What's open, what's in Pro

Pro code isn't in the public repo. Building from source gives you the free app, not a free Pro.

Why open core

You can check what a private AI app does with your chats. Pro keeps the lights on.

  • Read what it does A privacy app should be checkable. Every request the open-source build makes is in code you can read.
  • Build your own Fork it, change it, ship it under your own name. The MIT License allows commercial use.
  • Pro pays the bills Subscriptions fund development and the hosted services Pro uses: the remote-access relay, Pro Search and backups.
  • Same core either way The store app is this core with the Pro code added. The free features you can read are the free features you get.

Build it yourself

You need Flutter (stable channel) and the toolchain for your platform: Xcode for iPhone and Mac, Android Studio for Android.

  1. Clone the repository
    git clone https://github.com/slim-elephant/lm-mini.git
    cd lm-mini
  2. Copy the Firebase placeholders

The repo ships example Firebase files that point at a placeholder project, so the app builds without one. Firebase features stay off until you use your own. Android needs no Firebase file.

    cp lib/firebase_options.example.dart lib/firebase_options.dart
    cp ios/Runner/GoogleService-Info.example.plist ios/Runner/GoogleService-Info.plist
    cp macos/Runner/GoogleService-Info.example.plist macos/Runner/GoogleService-Info.plist
  3. Fetch packages
    flutter pub get
  4. Run it
    flutter run

For sign-in and the other Firebase features, connect your own Firebase project. The build guide shows how.

Common questions

Is LM Mini open source?

The core app is. It is MIT-licensed on GitHub at github.com/slim-elephant/lm-mini. LM Mini Pro is not: Pro code ships only in the official App Store, Google Play and Mac builds.

Can I get Pro by building from source?

No. The Pro code is not in the repository, and a source build hides Pro features and upgrade prompts. To use Pro, install the official app and subscribe.

Does a build from source talk to LM Mini servers?

It ships without our Firebase configuration and without Pro services, and it sends chats only to the providers you configure. It may still check lmmini.com for version information, and the Mac app's Share with phone uses our relay, which forwards encrypted traffic and stores nothing. If you add your own Firebase project, that data goes to your project.

Why does my build look different from the store app?

Pro features and upgrade prompts are hidden, and features that use our Firebase backend (sign-in, feature requests, community themes, the voice catalog) stay off until you connect your own Firebase project. The free features run the same code.

Can I publish my fork to the App Store or Google Play?

Yes, the MIT License allows it. Give it your own name, icon and bundle ID, and don't present it as LM Mini or as the official app.
